March is Problem Gambling Awareness Month

February 28, 2017

Each year, the addiction community takes the month of March to recognize the impact that problem gambling has on the general public. Non-profits, just like us, around the country engage in a collective mass effort with the goal being spreading awareness about problem gambling.

While just 1-3% of people suffer from a gambling addiction, when you put that number into context, you’ll quickly realize that 2% of 318 million people is over 6.3 million people. Problem gambling doesn’t only affect the gambler, but their friends, colleagues, and loved ones.

Our theme this year centers around the role technology plays in contributing to problem gambling. Throughout the month of March, we will be engaging in a dynamic, multi-level campaign that seeks to spread awareness on the public health issue of problem gambling.

Gambling used to be something that you had to seek out. The desire would require a casino or gaming facility, or at the very least—a group of friends willing to engage in the weekly poker game. Technology has completely changed the way people gamble.

The modern smart phone has made gambling more accessible and quicker than ever.

Ten years ago, a casino would require acres of land.

Today, that casino is in your pocket.
