>> May is Military Appreciation Month

May has become the annual milestone for paying our respects to current and former military members and their families. Memorial Day, Military Spouse Appreciation Day, and Armed Forces Day all happen this month.

In 1999, Congress marked May as Military Appreciation Month -- a time to honor those who serve and have served, pay respects to those who made the ultimate sacrifice, and recognize the military’s role in our nation’s history.

During this time, it is also important for us to recognize the unique challenges that face past and present service members and their families. Did you know that veterans and active members of military service are twice as likely to suffer from a gambling addiction?

Risk is no stranger to active and retired members of the military. Serving in the line of duty at times requires risking one’s life in order to protect the safety of those at home. To soldiers, risking money or other items of value pales in comparison. But problem gambling leads to far more than financial troubles. A gambling addiction can put education and career goals out of reach, jeopardize your most important relationships, and alienate your family. It can even lead to death, as suicide rates are higher for problem gambling than other addictive disorders.

> Prevention is the Best Defense, and Treatment is Possible

Being aware of the risks and being able to see the warning signs is crucial in the prevention of problem gambling. If you or someone you know may be suffering from a gambling addiction, it is never too early or too late to make a difference.
