Women
Historically, compulsive gamblers were male. However, with traditional role and lifestyle changes, women have the time, money and inclination to gamble. Gambling now holds the same attraction for women as for men and can be an equally powerful compulsion.
Typically, women develop a gambling problem as a means of excitement or to escape troubled relationships, childhood disturbances, loneliness, boredom or the loss of someone close. They are also less likely to seek help. More specifically, although women represent one-third of all problem gamblers, only one-tenth participate in self-help groups or other forms of treatment. Women feel ashamed because of problems they have caused by their gambling. They don't want others to see them as weak or incapable. So, they are reluctant to seek help.
The FCCG offers services for women through its HelpLine, referral provider network and other supports. The agency has also produced a gender-specific 30-second public service announcement for television in English and Spanish, as well as a brochure in English, Spanish and Creole, "Women Who Gamble: A growing concern in Florida" (Brochures: English - Spanish - Creole), which outlines what female gamblers say about gambling, the four stages of gambling and how to know if one is gambling too much. Also, to determine whether you or a woman close to you is experiencing problems due to gambling, check out the following warning signs.
